The benefits of concrete just keep getting better. In addition to its great strength, durability, aesthetics and sustainable benefits, concrete is proving its cost-effectiveness and true value more than ever. PACA and pavement engineers with the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) will work hand-in-hand with you to convert your parking lot design from asphalt to concrete without hurting your bottom line.

What's Required?

  1. Incorporate a parking lot or other flat surface (i.e., patio, campus, walkways, etc) that covers 10,000 sq. ft. of surface.
  2. Must use a PACA supplier for the concrete material on the project.
  3. Must use a PACA supplier for the concrete material on the project.

What's Included?

  1. Scale CAD drawing with jointing plan and suggested typical design details, including curbs, gutters, drains, contraction joints, isolation joints, construction joints, thickened edges, tied joints, doweled joints, lug anchors sidewalks, etc.
  2. A detailed transmittal letter, which may include the following:
    1. Recommended concrete pavement thicknesses to be determined by acceptable engineering practices for anticipated loading conditions, including ACI 330R “Guide for Design and Construction of Concrete Parking Lots,” NRMCA’s Concrete Pavement Analyst software and other thickness design software programs offered by the American Concrete Pavement Association and the Portland Cement Association
    2. Potential sources of project specifications
    3. Base materials
    4. Potential for LEED points
    5. Subgrade and drainage, for pavements with and without detention
    6. Hydrological illustration for pervious concrete projects
  3. Disclaimer stating that the Design Suggestions are not every known fact about concrete pavement but complies with current industry standards. The final design is the responsibility of the engineer on record for the project.

The benefits of a concrete pavement include:

  1. Concrete provides long service life with very low maintenance – offering a significant cost savings over the life of the parking lot.
  2. Concrete pavement does not need to be resurfaced or resealed, eliminating possible business interruption costs associated with those activities.
  3. The high reflectivity of concrete reduces the amount of lamps and energy needed to light a parking area.
  4. Concrete parking lots reduce the heat island effect, saving energy costs for adjacent buildings.
