Laying ConcreteA recent promotion effort by Casilio Concrete in concert with Essroc Cement and PACA/PCPC staff resulted in the placement of approximately 1000 cubic yards of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC). The project was originally designed to be constructed with asphalt. However, the ever escalating price of that material created an opportunity for our industry for this innovative concrete application.

Seizing on that opportunity, Casilio Concrete contacted PACA/PCPC about the project and using the Concrete Pavement Analyst (CPA) software program showed the contractor how concrete could be utilized for less money and greater durability.

Roller compacted concrete takes its name from the construction method used to place it. The material is placed by using conventional or high-density asphalt paving equipment. It is then compacted with rollers.

Rolling

RCC has the same basic ingredients as conventional concrete: cement, water, and aggregates, such as gravel or crushed stone. But unlike conventional concrete, it's a drier mix—stiff enough to be compacted by vibratory rollers. It needs neither forms nor finishing, nor does it contain dowels or steel reinforcing.

These qualities have taken roller compacted concrete from specialized applications to mainstream pavement work. Today, RCC is used for any type of industrial driveway, parking area, or heavy-duty pavement application. The reason is simple. RCC has the strength and performance of conventional concrete with the economy and placement simplicity of asphalt. Coupled with long service life and minimal maintenance, RCC's low initial cost adds up to high value and a better return on investment.

Based on discussion with managers from Liberty Properties, and those of the construction crew, RCC will now be given consideration as the primary option for similar paving projects.
